Hi, thanks for stopping to visit. I'm afraid that not even the Catechism would bring some of these folks back into the fold. Would that it were so! I'd buy copies and start handing them out!

If all practicing Catholics read the "CATECHISM of the CATHOLIC CHURCH, Second Edition", and it was used as a Student Text as part of the cirriculum at all Seminaries, Convents, Catholic Universities, 11th & 12th grades Catholic School High Schools, RCIA classes, etc - - - there would be UNITY in the Catholic Church regarding Faith and Morals.
The "CCC 2nd Ed" is a "sure norm for teaching the faith", and an "Authentic Reference Text" - per Pope John Paul II with an Imprimi Potest by Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger. It was first printed in the US in March 2000.

In fairness, no, you did not object to the call to return to God -- I was merely using our FB conversation as a jumping off point but should have been more specific. I'm certain Beck has his share of glassy-eyed followers as do virtually any of the personalities we have in front of us on the public stage. As for cars full of foul-mouthed people - that's amazing - the same thing has happened to me. Once - someone pulled up next to me and started railing at me about a bumper sticker I had on my car - I could have handled it had they chosen to speak intelligently but the only communication they seemed capable of was four-letter filth. On another occasion I was praying with a group of people in front of the local PP facility and an adult male drove by, again, shouting obscenities, this time though there were women present (of several ages, teen, young adult, middle, and older) and I felt a terrible shame.

I did not, do not, and will not make any comparison whatsoever between Glenn Beck and the Catholic Church & our Holy Father. There simply is none. Again, my only point was to say that a public cry for prayer, repentance, and a return to Godly ways is a good thing.

While I do not doubt your sincerity nor your faith, could easily expend many words about the ease with which some hang that sign of "devout Catholic" around their necks. I fear that sign may well become for them a millstone. As for me, I have not always been a "devout Catholic" and I was told not long ago by someone that I'm "too Catholic". All I can say is that the millstone I carry is still heavy.

Let's keep each other in prayer because it is you and I who, with the Church and Jesus Christ, will save the world! :)

In fairness, I did not object to the call to return to God. I strongly suspected his motives for holding such a gathering. And yes, he does have "glassy-eyed" followers. I have met more than my share whose eyes get that glaze generally reserved for members of cults, whenever they speak of him. I will concede that not all are like this, but enough are.

Like any devout Catholic, I believe with all my heart that we need to return to God, but my point in that discussion was that Beck often finds himself at odds with what the Church is teaching and that we should be heeding the Pope over any TV personality or self-proclaimed prophets"

If the fruits of last weekend are that these people return home gentler, less likely to harass others (as some did me, two years ago, when they followed me in a car yelling obscenities at me) and less likely to spout lies for political ends, then it will turn out to have been a good thing. But I doubt that is going to happen.

As is usually the case your words are wise and charitable and above all insightful. Yes, exceptions to every rule abound and this is no exception to that exception! Our flawed humanity and the flawed world we have wrought hold us all in one... way or another back from being able to completely love God, love one another, and above all allow ourselves to be loved. Yes, sadly, you are right, many women (and men also) are products of homes filled with brokenness of one kind or another and who carry the weight of their growing up in those homes for all their lives. Thank you Patricia!
